Women who get breast implants are almost three times as likely to commit suicide as those who do not, suggests new research.
The study, published in the journal Annals of Plastic Surgery, followed 3,527 Swedish women who got implants between 1965 and 1993 and analyzed patterns gleaned from death certificates, Reuters reports.
Of those women, 175 women had committed suicide during the study period. That’s a three-fold increase in the numbers that could be expected in the general population, although the study notes that that increased risk was not apparent until 10 years after the surgeries.
